A Golden Opportunity. (page 2)

From a part time home business to a Million Pound franchise

From my own experience of trying to find good home cleaners I realised there was a real opportunity to provide honest, reliable and efficient cleaning services to others.

I registered the name 'SelClene' and took out a Trade Mark.

I felt more people should know about SelClene. So I advertised my agency as a 'Business Opportunity' to be published in a series of monthly manuals.

To my surprise, large numbers subscribed. Over the next year (1991-2) I wrote a series of business manuals on how to run the agency.

* Month One explained the business concept.
* Month Two explained how to attract client enquiries.
* Month Three explained how to convert enquiries into sales.
* Month Four covered worker marketing and
* Month Five explained how to vet workers for honesty, reliability and competence.
* Subsequent months dealt with administration, budgeting and business development.

By 1993 my Maida Vale agency had grown to 300 clients. The early franchisees demanded exclusive areas and advice and help in starting up their own SelClene agencies - plus they had some ideas of their own to improve the business.

In 1994/5 areas were made exclusive in return for an 'Exclusive Area Fee'. We had become a fully fledged Franchise. In 1994 we had our first SelClene Franchise Conference.

Immediately below  you can see three of a party of twenty of our franchisees enjoying a well earned break in France on a company sponsored trip.

Q: How can I be sure SelClene can work for me?

A: My investment in Lloyd's of London had seemed too good to be true. It was! I expected to sit back and watch the profits pour in, but instead I saw my house vanish down an open drain. I did however learnt the reason why SelClene works so well.

SelClene works because it is a business producing a real service of real value to real people who have an identifiable and growing need.

The domestic services sector in Britain is now worth an estimated £9bn a year (Norwich Union Report) up from £4bn five years ago. More and more couples comprise two partners both choosing to work, leaving less time to do the household chores.

Domestic Services is forecast to be a massive growth sector in 2000-2005. SelClene is a niche provider efficiently and profitably servicing a part of this huge and growing client demand.

Our early franchisees helped improve the business with new ideas: You can see some of them in the pictures above on a trip we all took to France. These include, Rocky O' Brien (SelClene Plymouth), Phil Young (SelClene Battersea),David Dickson (SelClene Sheffield), and David Robinson (SelClene Ayr and SelClene Edinburgh)
